What would YOU do if you spotted a £50,000 diamond ring outside Nando's?

When news broke about the good Samaritan Andy, who made it his mission to find the owner of a diamond ring spotted on the floor outside Nando’s, Hatton Jewels were approached to provide a jewellery valuation The plan was to assess the ring to see if it was real, what the piece was and how much it could be worth however we only had the pictures ‘Honest Andy' uploaded on Facebook to go by! Here’s how Sarah, manager of Hatton Jewels went about assessing the ring:

‘First of all we examined the central diamond. There are four key factors that establish a diamond’s value, Carat, Colour, Clarity & Cut, known as The Four Cs. We started by ascertaining the carat weight, from the proportions of the diamond to the gentlemen’s finger we believed the diamond to weigh between 3.00ct-3.50ct.

The second C, Colour, is difficult to estimate from a picture as in different pictures the diamond looked whiter and in others more yellow. We gave the diamond a colour of I to J estimate as an I colour diamond would look reasonable white whereas a J colour diamond would have a tinge of yellow to it.Engagement Ring Fount Outside Nando's Worth Over £50,000!

The third C, Clarity, is the hardest to establish as clarity is graded using 10x magnification and as such it is nearly impossible to grade this from a picture. However it is possible from the close up images to establish that the Clarity is likely to be higher than an SI as you would be able to see small natural inclusions within the stone.  Therefore we are determined that the diamond is most likely a VS clarity or higher.

The final C, Cut, normally refers only to round brilliant cut diamonds as a way of grading the cut expertise of the diamond and whether it has the optimum refraction of light, but in this case I will refer to Cut as the shape of the diamond. As the diamond is set it is difficult to see whether the corners of the diamond are faceted on curved. The importance of this determines whether the diamond is a radiant or cushion cut shape. After viewing the pictures we believed that the corners were faceted and thus the stone is a radiant cut.

The mount appeared to be made of Platinum or 18ct White Gold and had the legal metal hallmark. The diamonds set into the mount were Brilliant Cut and based on the our perception of the central stone, we believe that the surrounding diamonds are F-G in Colour, VS in Clarity and come to a total carat weight of 2.00ct.

In conclusion, based on the above details, this diamond ring could be worth RRP between £50-80,000.00. It is lovely to hear that due to this kind gentlemen’s hard work, the ring has been returned to its rightful owner and restored our faith in humanity!'
