August’s Birthstone Peridot, and other dazzling green gemstones
Somehow, it’s August, and this week we’re looking at some of the most beautiful green gemstones, not least because August’s Birthstone is the magical Peridot. Read on to find out more about this unusual gemstone, and some of our favourite green gemstone jewellery, including magnificent emerald engagement rings, and jade jewellery.
The history of Peridot
Considered one of the world’s oldest gems, Peridot was discovered as early as 1500 B.C. Records indicate that the first stones were found on Topazo Island (now known as St. John’s) in the Egyptian Red Sea. Today, peridot is the national gem of Egypt.
It’s green colour is very unique
Known for its stunning green hues, Peridot is one of the only gemstones to be found in a single colour. Most stones can be found in a variety of different colours and can often range from light pink to blue, but Peridot is only green, albeit in different shades depending on the amount of iron contained in its crystal structure.
It has often been mistaken for Emerald
Throughout history Peridot has often been mistaken for Emerald. In fact, there is some evidence to suggest Cleopatra's royal jewels were in fact Peridot, and not Emerald, although it has never been concluded.
Peridot today
Peridot is mostly celebrated as August’s official Birthstone, but it’s unique and radiant colour makes it perfect for pendants or rings for any occasion.
