Choosing The Perfect Diamond Shape

There are many different shapes of diamonds, the below are the most popular cuts that are available.

Round Brilliant Cut – The round brilliant cut diamond is the most popular diamond shape and they account for more than three quarters of all diamonds sold.

For almost 100 years, diamond cutters have been using advanced theories of light behaviour and precise mathematical calculations to optimise the fire and brilliance in a round diamond. Each stone has 57-58 facets and it is the only shape to have the perfect proportions defined

Emerald Cut – Emerald cut diamonds are among the more popular fancy cuts. These gemstones have longer lines and are usually less fiery than a round brilliant cut but instead have wider more dramatic flashes of light. Not all Emerald cuts are rectangular; the proportions can vary to the point of it appearing square.

When choosing an emerald cut diamond it is important to pay attention to the quality of the diamond. It is better to go for a higher clarity grade because inclusions are more noticeable, plus the lower colour grades can sometimes show within the outer facets.

Asscher Cut – The Asscher cut diamonds were the first cut to be patented, it was developed by Joseph Asscher in 1902. The cut was further developed to its current specifications in 2001 for a more brilliant shine. Asscher cut diamonds are very similar to the emerald cut however its proportions are more equal.

When choosing an Asscher cut diamond it is important to pay attention to the quality of the diamond. It is better to go for a higher clarity grade because inclusions are more noticeable, plus the lower colour grades can sometimes show within the outer facets.

Cushion Cut – Cushion cut diamonds have rounded corners and larger facets to increase their brilliance. It is based on the antique cushion cut which is a combination of round and square outlines, the soft edges created give it its name.

This unique cut is popular for its antique look and romantic style, these diamonds evoke natural shine and beauty.

Radiant Cut – The radiant cut has 70 facets is know for its cut corners. This cut has the class and elegance of an emerald cut diamond with out loosing the brilliance. The proportions can very from it appearing rectangular or square, this cut is particular popular with fancy coloured diamonds.

The radiant cut is the first rectangular cut to have the same facet pattern (therefore sparkle) as a brilliant cut diamond.

Princess Cut – The princess cut is sometimes referred to as a square modified brilliant, as its faceting style is similar to a round brilliant, with triangular and kite shaped radiating from the centre.

Princess cut diamonds can have between 49 and 78 facets, the more facets the greater the brilliance. Although it is a relatively new cut it is becoming increasingly popular as it offers both style and excellent sparkle.

Oval Cut – Oval cut diamonds are very similar to a round diamond except that it is an elliptical variation. The shape presents a larger surface area than a round brilliant diamond and accentuates long, slender fingers.

Although there are many other cuts such as Pear Shape, Marquise Cut, Heart Shape, Trilliant Cut and Baguette Cut. These shapes are less commonly used in engagement rings.
