January Destinations to Escape the Winter Blues
If you’re looking to escape the cold this January, we’ve put
together some of our favourite spots where you can catch some winter sun and
start 2018 as you mean to go on.
Puerto de la Cruz,
Tenerife
January is the coldest month in Tenerife, but with an
average of 21 degrees, that’s more than warm enough to lie out on the beach and
soak up some rays. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, Mount Teide, the
highest mountain in Spain offers amazing views of the island and is well worth
a hike. You could of course also just take the cable car!
Playa Blanca, Lanzarote
Staying in the Canary Isles, Lanzarote shares the same temperatures as Tenerife around this time of year, perfect for t-shirt and shorts, and strolling around the town or sitting by the pool. Head to the South Peninsula of the island, to the Playa Blanca district to maximise the warm sun promising 6 to 7 hours of sunshine every day. ‘Playa Blanca’ means ‘white beach’, and delivers on its name. White sandy beaches stretch the coastline for miles, and with low crowds, you’ll be sure to find a quiet spot to relax and destress after the busy Christmas holidays.
Cape Verde
Cape Verde still remains largely unexplored by us Brits
looking for a short sunny break. It lies just off the coast of West Africa, but
with tour operators such as Thomson Airways now offering flights, the five hour
flight gets you five extra degrees above the Canary Isles in January, with perfect
blue skies and no rainfall. Bliss!
Cape Verde is made up of 10 different islands, so there is
plenty of room to explore and hop around each beautiful island, or if you just
want to drop your bags and head to the beach, it offers miles of jet white
sandy beaches, calm waves and plenty of options for water sports once you’re
rested up.
Barbados
Barbados needs little introduction, and if you’re an all or
nothing person, Barbados tops our list as the ultimate place to jet away to
this January. The sun shines for an incredible 9 hours a day, but the winds
blow a cool 12 mph making it perfect weather for sunbathing, swimming or snorkelling.
You'll find some of the very best hotels and restaurants in
the Caribbean on Barbados' glam west coast. But the island's appeal is far
broader than that. For British holidaymakers, it offers a winning combination
of the familiar and exotic, with Anglican churches and cricket greens in every
village - yet also green monkeys sometimes appearing in your hotel garden.
Let us know what you think of our list, we love hearing from
you! Remember to pack your best jewellery for these amazing destinations so
