London's Christmas Events
With the festive season in full swing, we’ve lined up some of the capital's most Christmassy events for you to sink your mittened hands and chapped lips into this year, and it’s looking a lot brighter than last year! Young or old, from the staple annual events, to the more cooky and off-beat festive celebrations, we’re sure we’ve listed something for everyone to enjoy this Christmas.
London’s Christmas lights
London always delivers on Christmas lights and this year is no exception, from the Norwegian gifted tree in Trafalgar Square, to Bond Street, London is looking more festive than ever this year. Our favourites are the Carnaby Street lights in Soho, and of course our very own Hatton Gardens also comes alive at this time of year. Whilst the open-top buses are usually reserved for tourists, we think it’s a great way to take a tour and see all the lights this year, just pack your gloves and take a warm cup of coco!
Christmas ice skating in London
Winter ice skating is always hugely popular in London. Pretty ice rinks pop up at places like the Natural History Museum, Somerset House, Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace from October right through until January. We’ve heard that this year will be the last time the ice rink is at the National History Museum, and it really is a beautiful place to skate, so make sure you get it in this year!
Take a trip on the Mail Rail
This is something different indeed but one the kids will love. Mail Rail at the Postal Museum, the subterranean ride which takes visitors back in time to the heyday of the postal railway, will get a Christmas makeover. From wartime wives wishing husbands a Merry Christmas from afar, to the broadcast of the first King’s Speech on the BBC, the immersive projections and audio along the ride will get visitors into the festive spirit.
See the Northern Lights in London
No this isn’t an adverse effect of global warming, as part of London’s Christmas Lights a clever installation has opened at Guildhall Yard which projects the Borealis in the sky above. The work of artist Dan Acher is free to see, and walk up tickets are still available.
Christmas markets
It wouldn’t be Christmas in the capital without a stroll through a Bavarian Christmas market or two to smell the mulled wine. There are plenty of options to choose from, but a little further afield, Blenheim Palace has just been named one of the best Christmas markets around, with over 120 stalls and some magical lighting set in one of the UKs most notorious historical palace’s, what more could you want.
