NYFW SS17: Earrings alert!
New York Fashion Week’s designers are all about big, bold statement earrings this season! We’re now day 6 of one of the craziest months of the year in the fashion world, and the style has already accented the lobes of countless models. Be ready to see a lot of these audacious earrings on the runways in London, Milan, and Paris in the next few weeks. It looks like big daring earrings will take over next summer, so be ready ladies!
Monse took an edgier route with the trend:
one single, sculptural dangler atop equally asymmetrical separates. Much
like other quietly subversive elements found throughout the
outfits (deconstructed suiting, sequined chokers, dainty septum
rings), it gave the finished effect a sophisticated kind of grit.
The ear
ornaments at Hellessy followed clean lines with a chain of
interlocking circles—the perfect complement to clothing's strong
shapes. Also, have you noticed yet that all these examples are silver?
Considering the preponderance of chunky gold jewellery (earrings and otherwise)
in fashion these last few seasons, this subtle shift feel fresh.
CG
Another way
to shake things up: The rose-gold take on the trend we spotted over at CG
by Chris Gelinas. Ranging from just a few inches in length to nearly
shoulder-skimming, the design's coppery luster proved special enough to
elevate some of the line's lower key offerings, such as a short sleeve
grey sweater and black skirt combo. That same magic
will definitely work on your favourite T-shirts and jeans. Watch out
this might me the one look every fashionistas will adopt!
Jeremy Scott
Speaking
before the show, Scott said that he found his new collection's
inspiration in the early-’80s days of East Village squats, barmy club nights,
and pervy peep shows. Perhaps a neon pink–tinted take is more accurate. The
reason this period continues to fascinate is that it conjures a bygone
vibrancy—a time when New Yorkers could get up to all kinds of freakiness,
thanks to the fact that they were largely ignored. Scott got at that vibrancy
through his flashy palette and jutting geometries, motifs that came fully to
life in his series of sculptural, sequined show-closing looks embellished
by geometrical colourful earrings.
At Creatures of the Wind, we noticed a set of burnished discs which,
while only present in a single look, may have been one of the
collection's most covetable pieces.
Proenza Schouler
With earrings swaying like Alexander Calder mobiles and the pleated
skirts swinging high-low, there seemed to be permanent sense of movement. Originality,
imagination and certainly craftsmanship describe accurately Proenza Schouler's
SS17 collection. Perhaps "eclectic candelabras is the best way to
describe the earrings that decorate the models' ears.
Altuzarra
Joseph Altuzarra said of
his collection “I wanted something that felt happy, joyous, flirty, and fun.” Who can
argue with that? Altuzarra had been inspired by David Lynch's 1990
film Wild At Heart, which led him down a comprehensive kitsch
warren of gingham shirt dresses, tight cherry-printed ruffled skirts,
Lolita-style bralettes, and scene-stealing earrings which we absolutely
adore!
