Secret staycation spots
With Summer holiday getaways to Europe and further afield a distant memory, we’re looking at some of the best staycation destinations in the UK. Often forgotten, the UK is home to some of the most spectacular beaches, even finding themselves in the top ten beaches in the world, and some of the most historic cities and towns anywhere. We’ve listed some of our favourite, and sometimes secret spots so you can enjoy this weather with the sea at your feet, and surrounded by ancient beauty.
This may look like a Carribean island, but it’s actually in our beloved UK. It’s an island called Iona in the Hebrides, off the northern coastline of Scotland. The water may be a bit colder, but it will be great to refresh yourself in this heat, and you’ll likely have the whole beach to yourself.
If you’d prefer to stay on the mainland, you could do a lot worse than Oldmanshore Bay in Scotland. You could easily be forgiven for thinking this was somewhere in the rocky Algarve region of Portugal or one of the stunning Canary Isles, but this beautiful whie sandy beach is in Scotland's magical northwest, a few hours from Inverness.
Greece, South of France or Ibiza? None of the above! In fact this stunning beach with a unique sandbank is in Cornwall. Pedn Vounder beach is a bit of a local secret. It’s not easy to get to, and you could easily miss it among the other amazing beaches in Cornwall, but this spot has to be one of our favourites in the UK, and maybe the world. The shallow water warms up enough to splash around in and past the sandbank you swim in the waves or jump off the nearby rocks. It truly is a very special place.
Finally, this tidal pool in Polperro has to make the list. There are a few famous tidal pools in the world, Bondi Beach in Australia is probably the most famous, but we have them here in the UK too. Polperro is also probably one of the most picturesque towns in the country too, with fantastic beaches to boot.
Just because you’re not glamming it up in the sun soaked shores of the continent, you can still wear your most fabulous jewellery to these stunning places, and in the evening at some of the best local restaurants in the country, because, well, why not, it’s been a strange and tough few months!
