Spring clean your home (and mind) this Easter

With lockdown easing and the pubs reopening in just a few short weeks, Easter has fallen at the perfect time to open those windows and shake out the last year with a spring clean ready for the Summer. Not only is it a great activity for cleaning up the homes we’ve all spent so long in over the last year, it’s also a great mental exercise, helping keep our minds healthy, and clearly marking the end of what has been a challenging year. This renewal could come from just clearing clutter and finding some old jewellery you no longer use, (use our sell my jewellery page to get a free valuation), or from giving one of the rooms of your house a new lick of paint - that Zoom background could do with a change! Here’s our top tips for having a fantastic spring clean this Easter.
Why do we Spring clean?
Some researchers trace the origin of spring cleaning to the Iranian Nowruz, the Persian new year, which falls on the first day of spring. Iranians continue the practice of khaneh tekani, literally "shaking the house", just before the Persian new year. Everything in the house is thoroughly cleaned, from the drapes to the furniture.
Fail to plan, plan to fail
Like everything in life, a good plan will make your spring cleaning process much more efficient and you will likely get more done. If you make a list of all the areas of your home that you want to get clean, you can allocate time to each space accordingly, making sure that you get through all the areas you planned. It can also be useful to list out the cleaning products that you will need when tackling your spring cleaning tasks, so that these are pre-bought and easy to reach.
Declutter
Studies show that a disorganised home adds to your stress level. It signals to your brain that work isn’t done. The scientific implications of inhaling dust, combined with the stress of coming back to a cluttered work space, can take a toll. Since we’re all spending more time at home and in our home offices specifically, keeping a neat work space is more important than ever
Set aside some time to:
-
Dust and organise your office
-
Look through that dreaded junk drawer (and desk drawers!)
-
Organise your closets
You may be surprised how fresh you feel after you eliminate unnecessary stress from your life.
Give your home a refresh
If your space feels dark and heavy, you can make small changes to help make it light and fresh for spring. Adding new colorful pillows or art are great ways to change up your space. Replacing items like bedding, towels, table linens, and even window treatments are other ways to transform your rooms for spring and warm weather ahead.
Always work from top to bottom
When you think about how to spring clean your home, it’s important to start from the ceiling down. This will force debris downward and keep you from having to re-dust or re-clean your space. If you have a vacuum with an extension hose, use it to get cobwebs and dust from your ceilings and fans first.
Then dust your furniture and other items before vacuuming all the dust and debris off your floors. It will save you time!
Have a digital clear out too
It's not just physical space that needs a bit of a spring clean. Move out of control files on your desktop into their own folder to instantly clear-up the screen. Although this is just a temporary fix, it'll allow you plenty of time to sort through everything in an orderly way, little by little.
Spring clean your digital footprint. We often let emails accumulate in our inbox without even opening them. Thankfully there are a couple of easy ways to tackle this. You can either search 'unsubscribe' in your emails and instantly gain access to the majority of the marketing mails you don't want or, if you are looking to complete the job, sort your inbox by “from” and simply select the sender you don't want to hear from anymore.
